NEUROMUSCULAR DISORDERS
Neuromuscular disorders affect nerves controlling your muscles. The voluntary muscles are ones that you consciously control like arm and leg movement. Your nerve cells send the messages that control these muscles. When these cells become unhealthy or die, communication between the nervous system and muscles begins to break down, resulting in weakened muscles that waste away. This weakness may lead to cramps, aches and pains, and other joint and mobility problems. This disorder also affects your heart function, your ability to breathe, and your sleep patterns.
Due to the progressive nature, patients lose their accessory (involuntary) respiratory muscles causing hypoventilation to occur during sleep. To support the non-functional muscles, Non-invasive Ventilation is required. Other indicators of neuromuscular disorders include:
| • |
Loss of respiratory muscles
|
| • |
Morning Headaches
|
| • |
Hypoxemia
|
| • |
Irregular breathing while asleep
|
| • |
Weakened voice
|
| • |
Quiet speech with fewer words per breath
|
| • |
Weight loss
|
| • |
Ineffective cough
|
| • |
Increased need to sleep |
The subtle symptoms of sleep disordered breathing in patients with neuromuscular disease may be tough to spot but can be improved once the symptoms are recognized and properly treated. Patients within this disease category are at high risk of sleep disordered breathing.
