SLEEP APNEA TREATMENTS
APAP Defined
APAP (Auto Adjusting Positive Airway Pressure) is a device used in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Pressure adjustments are made as needed throughout the sleep cycle. These are similar to CPAP machines but utilize sensing technology that allows for automatic adjusting of air pressures. The purpose of the APAP is to provide lowest possible pressures for each position or sleep level. During APAP use the:
| • |
Pressure remains at a lower level when there are no problems but responds by is raising pressure when they are detected |
| • |
Pressure is automatically gradually increased and lowered in response to patient problems or their absence. In addition, the device can quickly adjust depending on the problems even within single breaths |
| • |
Overall pressure remains low until a problem is detected. |
| • |
Pressure is then automatically raised rapidly |
| • |
The pressure exerted using APAP devices is lower than with standard CPAP |
| • |
The APAP may help improve patient compliance |
