SLEEP APNEA TREATMENTS
Non-Invasive Ventilation Defined
This refers to those times when the patient cannot ventilate for him/herself. While sleeping, these patients’ respiratory muscles do not work properly. Non-invasive ventilation replaces their non-functioning or poorly functioning diaphragm with technology. In essence, the technology kicks in to give you a breath. Respiratory muscles are smooth muscles which mean they cannot be regenerated. Non-invasive ventilation enables the patient to breathe easier. This may also include people with a non-functioning drive to breathe - such as patients with central sleep apnea.
