TESTING: Sleep-Disorder Breathing

In addition to discussions with a sleep clinician and/or a physician a sleep study may be necessary. These can be as extensive as an overnight stay in a board-certified sleep lab with a variety of monitoring devices attached to the patient while sleeping or as simple as a portable device that records similar information as a sleep lab but usually conducted in the convenience of the patient's home. Here are some of the testing methods to identify sleep-disordered breathing problems:

•
EEG - Electro Encephalogram
•
EMG - Electromyography
•
EKG - Electrocardiograph to monitor electrical heart activity
•
EOG - Eleoctrooculargram records eye movement measurement
•
Airflow - As measured through the nose and mouth
•

Respiratory Effort - measurements of chest and abdomen movement

•
Oximetry - Measurement of oxygen levels in the blood
